Chapter Lead

The Chapter Lead will oversee the local chapter team. The Chapter Lead along with Core team members will work on a variety of tasks including event planning, management, general communication with members and the public. Additionally, the Chapter Lead will delegate tasks associated with the workshops to ensure student interests are addressed in programming and events/activities are marketed to the community. This is a vital role to cultivating strong relationships within the community which will help with creating a sustainable chapter.


Specific Responsibilities May Include:

  • Participate in monthly leadership conference call as well as meet regularly meet with the BBC executive team (Head office) to develop goals and strategies for the
  • Raise community awareness of the Black Boys Code programs
  • Determine volunteers needed for each local
  • Listen to parents and community leaders on community
  • Communicate with BBCHQ and local team to fulfill objectives, request support, BBC’s initiatives, opportunities,
  • Make possible the efforts of the BBC to fundraise and profile the program
  • Work with the team to plan and host events, identify workshop facilities, organizing times and dates, and arranging catering for the workshops.
  • Support volunteer training and development of educational


Hours: Minimum 5-6 hours per week, or as needed

Community Outreach Co-Ordinator

Do you enjoy networking with community leaders? Do you like speaking to people? Do you consider yourself to be a social person?  The Community Outreach Coordinator will work with chapter leader and the BBC executive team to spearhead student recruitment and marketing efforts to reach as many community groups as possible. The community Outreach Coordinator will also host events for parents, students and community leaders.


Specific Responsibilities May Include:

  • Build and maintain relationships with schools and youth organizations
  • Work with the BBC executive team as the chapter media representative to craft email newsletters, chapter blogs and maintain daily communication with students, parents and
  • Develop and facilitate communications to local schools, community members and youth serving
  •  Assist in execution of outreach and student recruitment plan
  • Support chapter leader by creating new resources, preparing reports, and managing chapter’s database of contacts (Schools, Community leaders, Media, )
  • Participate in organization-wide team meetings and activities


Hours: Approximately 2-3 hours per week


Our instructors need to be enthusiastic and self motivated individuals who will be required to deliver exceptional content to our boys. Our workshops cover a range of topics related to development, design, and making for learners of all ages. As the lead instructor you will deliver accessible digital literacy through quality workshops. You will gain experience teaching learners of diverse backgrounds and ages, and you will be inspired and inspire. Most importantly, as a volunteer Lead Instructor you’ll get that rewarding feeling knowing you are sharing knowledge, empowering our youth and contributing to the development of our future leaders. Instructors at Black Boys Code are responsible for teaching our boys the core concepts of computer programming, and ensuring that they are being challenged during the learning process.


Specific Responsibilities May Include:

  • The provision of a fun and engaging environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking skills. Instructors also provide input and recommendations to enhance the existing BBC curriculum.
  • Instructors need to have previous experience with Java, Unity, Game Maker Studio, Scratch, Game Maker Software and/or other game development
  • All instructors need to attend onboarding session the Friday before a workshop


Hours: Approximately 12-16 hours per month

Technology Assistant (Ruby HTML, CSS)

As the tech assistant, you will assist the instructor to deliver an awesome experience to our boys. At our workshop, you will be inspired and you will inspire, but most importantly, as a volunteer technical instructor, you’ll get that rewarding feeling knowing you are sharing knowledge, empowering our youth and contributing to the development of future technology leaders.

Technology assistants at Black Boys Code are responsible assisting the instructors for teaching our boys the core concepts of computer programming, and ensuring they are being challenged during the learning process.

Our tech assistants need to be enthusiastic self motivated individuals, able to deliver exceptional content to our boys.


Skills and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide a fun and engaging environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking skills.
  • Some knowledge of HTML, Ruby, CSS


In our workshops we strive to have a 4:1 ratio (or better!) which means for every four boys there’s one volunteer tech assistant to help them.

Volunteers and Events Co-Ordinators

The Volunteers and Events Coordinator keeps track of all volunteers and maintains an updated list for the local chapter. The Coordinator ensures all volunteers are given equal opportunity to participate in events and engages with volunteers to keep them excited about BBC.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Works closely with the Chapter Lead and Outreach Community Coordinator and assist in event logistics (i.e. facility search, logistics/dates, catering, )
  • Support volunteer training and workshop planning/assignments


Hours: Minimum 8-10 hours a month, or as needed (More hours may be required during events)

Volunteer Social Media Manager

Black Boys Code is in search of a volunteer Social Media Coordinator to promote BBC on our social media channels.


The goal of the Social coordinator is to increase visibility, engagement, and the digital footprint of Black Boys Code as well as to increase our communication and engagement with the general public and our community. You will have strong media placements skills, and as well as hands-on experience in all key aspects social media industry.


About Black Boys Code:

Black Boys Code is a Not for Profit organization dedicated to introducing young boys of colour through their critical development years (ages 8 to 17) to computer science through one-day and two day workshops, Hackathons, after school and summer programs.


About the Position:
In this role, you will be responsible for implementing our social media plan. You will also create and lead the social media marketing calendar and responsible for posting pictures, articles, videos, events and relevant content on Facebook, Twitter Youtube and Instagram accounts on a regular basis. You will also be requested to share promotional material on Facebook communities and groups to promote the work of our organization. Other responsibilities may include the creation of events or groups to facilitate communication with community members.


The ideal candidate should have:

  • Experience working with all social platforms including Facebook, Twitter ,YouTube, and Instagram.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Understanding or experience working in black community across North America
  • Maintain monthly social media calendar and schedule posts to various platforms
  • Manage social media channels during Black Boys Code sponsored events
  • Create memes and other web content for distribution
  • Sort through incoming social media direct messages
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member
  • A passion for technology, and diversity in tech.
