Bryan Johnson, left, a coding workshop crew and Germain Tanoh, who talked to the boys about his path to becoming a mathematician.

Bryan Johnson is used to standing out for more than just his skills and work ethic. Johnson, who spent 20 years working in technology at UPS and later Aeroplan, recalls a trip to the UPS head office in Atlanta, Georgia, where a third of the population identifies as black or African American.

Not all innovation starts with big headlines. Some Not all innovation starts with big headlines. Some of it starts with making things work better for people who need them most.

Shola Akinlade built with access in mind, creating pathways for businesses to participate in the digital economy. His journey shows that technology can be a tool for inclusion, growth, and possibility.

These are the examples we want Black youth to see. Building solutions that meet real needs!

The mindset is what shapes progress. Growth comes The mindset is what shapes progress. Growth comes from showing up, staying curious, and continuing forward even when things feel hard.

This Black History Month, we reflect on the habits our students can build by learning from tech leaders such as Tristan Walker: persistence, problem solving, and the courage to push through challenge.

This is why representation stays central to our work.

Moments like this stop us in our tracks. This is a Moments like this stop us in our tracks. This is a child who feels safe enough to speak up, curious enough to share, and confident enough to hold the mic.

Confidence doesn’t appear overnight. It grows when children are encouraged to ask questions, try new things, and know their voice matters in the room. In our workshops, we see this shift again and again.

When Black youth are surrounded by mentors who look like them and learning feels supportive, they are encouraged to show up fully. That confidence carries far beyond the workshop into classrooms, friendships, and future opportunities.

We launched in Detroit with an engaging Sphero rob We launched in Detroit with an engaging Sphero robotics activity, and the energy in the room said it all! ✊🏾

We were thrilled to see our young learners having fun as they explored the world of technology, using creativity, logic, and movement as an early touchpoint into how powerful and exciting tech can be when it’s hands-on and relatable.

A huge shout out to our mentors and instructors who showed up, guided each moment, and met our students with patience, encouragement, and belief. And thank you to the parents and caregivers who trusted us with their children, supported their curiosity, and continue to invest in their growth.

This Detroit launch is part of our vision to expand access to digital literacy, robotics, and AI for Black youth, and we’re committed to taking this momentum forward by creating more spaces where learning feels empowering and possible.
